There is a myriad of options to choose from when looking to purchase a bunk bed. They come in all shapes and sizes. There are bunk beds with shelving, storage, desks, even triple beds! The design isn’t the only factor to consider either, because the choice of what it is made out of should also impact your purchasing decision. There are wooden ones, and there are metals ones. You need to decide which material is right for you.
Wooden bunk beds
Wooden bunk beds are sturdy because wood is naturally a strong and very durable material. It won’t rust or bend and will last years even with knocks and bruises. If the plan is to use the bunk bed for several children over time, a wooden bunk bed is a solid investment. Whilst they can be a little more expensive than their metal counterparts, if you choose one that can be separated eventually into two beds, you have versatility and longevity at your fingertips. Wooden bunk beds are built to last, and can be restored to their former glory with a lick of paint or varnish after the kids have long flown the nest, and the grandchildren are on the scene.
Metal bunk beds
On the other hand, metal bunk beds are far less expensive than wooden ones. Kids love them because they have an ultra-modern look and feel, and are available in a vast range of bold colours. The downside to metal bunk beds is that they are not as robust and can easily dent and bend. The cheaper versions can often wobble and be a little unstable, and should be avoided at all costs. Fortunately, not all metal beds are created equally, so whilst there are cheap metal beds out there, there are also good quality metal beds. If metal is your choice of material, then invest in a high-quality metal bed that is likely to be a little more expensive, but it will pass the test of time.
When looking at wood versus metal bunk beds, the first thing to consider is appearance. This is highly likely to be decided upon based on your personal choice, and how it will fit into the existing decor of your home. Metal bunk beds are far more modern in appearance and have an industrial feel. Whilst wood is a natural material that has a more traditional appearance.
The bottom line is that both wood and metal as a material, have a lot to offer with very few differences between them. If you are looking for something easy to move, looks super modern and is easy to keep clean, then a metal bunk bed is the right choice for you. If you are looking for something sturdy, harder wearing, and that has a more rustic and cosy feel then choose a traditional wooden bunk bed.
